Long-time Canterbury estate agency to merge with biggest domestic competitor
One of Canterbury’s oldest estate companies – with provincial business roots dating back 160 years – is merging to become part of New Zealand’s largest full-service estate agency brand.
Matson & Allan – which has three branches in the Selwyn district – is merging as Bayleys Real Estate. The merger ends on March 1.
Matson & Allan employs eight sales and administration staff – with offices in Leeston, Darfield and Rolleston. Meanwhile, Bayleys branches in Leeston and Darfield employ eight sales and administration staff, with additional staff serving the region from the company’s central Christchurch branch.
Bayleys staff will move into the three offices of Matson & Allan, which will be completely reconfigured under the famous blue and white Bayleys logo. All Matson & Allan staff will be invited to switch to the Bayleys brand – supporting what is already Canterbury’s largest full-service estate agency with expertise in residential, lifestyle, commercial and rural, plus a suite of real estate advisory services.
Bayleys Canterbury managing director Pete Whalan said the merger with Matson & Allan reflected both agencies’ long-term visions for the province…based on decades of continued population and economic growth in the Selwyn district.
“We are delighted to have the Matson & Allan stable join the Bayleys brand. The company has a well-deserved reputation in Selwyn, which will be enhanced by accessing Bayleys extensive back-office support services, such as national print and digital marketing, in conjunction with a strong community sponsorship program both local and national,” Mr. Whalan said.
“With the support of Bayleys national and international marketing initiatives, the Matson & Allan team joining the brand will now be able to add even more value to their supplier relationships – ensuring that maximum value is reached for their suppliers in the sales process.
“It will certainly be an exciting time for Selwyn’s residential real estate sector.”
Bayleys Canterbury is part of Bayleys Real Estate – New Zealand’s largest full-service estate agency with a network of 90 offices nationwide, employing over 2,000 sales and support staff nationwide.
Matson Real Estate traces its genealogy to the cattle and wool trading company H Matson & Co in 1862. In 1970 stockbrokers. Bill Matson and Bill Allan formulated a new direction for the business – setting the genesis of what is now Matson & Allan Real Estate.
At first, the company specialized in the sale of farms. However, over the following decades the agency focused more on sales of lifestyle block properties – reflecting the evolution of the Selwyn district from agricultural blocks to residential enclaves, as well as commercial premises as as supportive social infrastructure.
Matson & Allan director Chris Flanagan, who entered the family real estate business in 1986 and then bought the business from his father Warren Flanagan in 2000, has focused more on the residential market as the district of Selwyn was becoming increasingly populated – moving from when the main road from Rolleston was a gravel road lined with two-metre high hedges, into the bustling satellite township it is today.
Selwyn’s appeal and growth was accelerated following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake – which saw thousands of homeowners within the city’s metropolitan urban boundaries relocate to satellite townships a distance of easy commute from the city’s central business district.
Access to transport between the towns of Selwyn and central Christchurch has been further improved during this period through the implementation of the Christchurch South Freeway four-lane expansion projects on National Highways 76 and One.
Mr. Flanagan said that while the Bayleys merger would end the Matson & Allan name in the province, the agency’s sales team remained committed to the region and looked forward to working for such a prestigious national brand agency. .
“Bayleys marketing initiatives and operational resources were really interesting for us. They underpin what is now New Zealand’s leading estate agency – with over 45 years of experience in the market. Bayleys’ ‘arsenal’ of marketing kit tools is truly exceptional, and we look forward to introducing them to our customers in the years to come,” Mr. Flanagan said.
Data from Statistics New Zealand indicates that the population of Selwyn District reached 73,600 people in the middle of last year, with the area continuing to grow in percentage terms faster than anywhere else in New Zealand – increasing by 3,400 people or 4.8% in the year to June 2021.
Meanwhile, the latest property sales statistics from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand indicate that the median selling price of properties sold in the Selwyn district increased by 37.3% in the year to January 2022. , going from $639,000 to $835,000 over 12 months. period.
Selwyn District Council notes that: “To sustain the Selwyn story, there needs to be a strong economy, with the most recent statistics showing economic growth of 7% against a national average of 4.2%. This is underpinned by strong commodity prices and business confidence – reflected in nearly $138 million in non-residential building permit applications over the past year.
Pete Whalan concluded: ‘It is exactly this type of growth data that prompted Matson & Allan to concentrate its business in the Greater Selwyn area around 26 years ago, and why the commercial baton has now passed to Bayleys to bring real estate sales to a new benchmark in the neighborhood.
