Owen Stacey’s real estate business
VICTORIA- Owen StaceyThe real estate activity of has soared since the beginning of his career with Engel & Volkers Vancouver Island eight months ago.
This is perhaps unsurprising because before starting his own personal real estate company, he worked in the aviation industry for the past 25 years, most recently as chief pilot flying large aircraft worldwide.
He got off to a flying start as he became a top 10 producer in December, just two months after he started with the brokerage. He was able to serve longtime friends from Victoria and across North America who were looking to purchase real estate in Greater Victoria and is focused on clients who need to downsize their living space.
“We want people to downsize their living space, not their lifestyle,” Stacey comments, adding that he’s a full-service real estate agent. “We have a lot of landlords who need the right agent, who has experience to work with them transitioning from a large home after the family has moved to college, to their home or to another area.
“I speak every week with clients who are in this ‘waiting pattern’ and who want to sell their property, but don’t know where to start. They may have all kinds of family trinkets they don’t know what to do with, and bedrooms that used to belong to their children and are full of memories that are no longer in use, and we help guide them through the process.
Strata properties are convenient for downsizing customers — especially snowbirds — who can lock the door and go for up to six months and their units are taken care of. Stacey tackles condo fees, which some see as a negative overcharge, with a simple explanation.
“The condominium fee really isn’t a bad thing, because it’s a flat rate for the services you already pay for in a single-family home. . .landscaping, heating/hot water, repairs, etc.
It was a combination of personal property investing and battling the Covid pandemic that convinced Stacey to settle into the profession in Victoria.
“Covid was a big change for me, being in aviation I had been flying private jets around the world for years,” he explains. “When Covid hit we were tasked with getting people home to Canada and on top of being a pilot – I was doing extra logistics for flight duties which was very time consuming.
“For 25 years, my wife and I have been investing in real estate, and when we were in California and elsewhere, we always watched what was happening in the North American markets,” he adds. “We brought that knowledge back to Victoria, and we have a lot of customers here as well as in the US who want to buy from Canada, including pilots. We have streamlined processes in place that really make a difference.
Relationships are important to Stacey.
“It’s about relationships and trust, and I love sharing my expertise with sellers and buyers. I’ve also renovated a number of properties, so I’ve made a lot of relationships with some great trades in that market,” he notes.
